Hit detection can be tricky to deal with in Shadow of the Ninja, as your default katana blade seems just a bit too short - and the alternative weapon, a longer-reaching spear of sorts, won't register damage on a foe right next to you. Only a ninja would be hardcore enough to voluntarily submerge himself underwater in an active sewer.Īs with any NES era action game, though, there are a few frustrations that threaten to spoil your experience. Hayate and Kaede are both overly agile, as good ninjas should be, and seeing them spin up and down through horizontal platforms, go hand-over-hand to traverse the undersides of those same platforms and work together to dispatch foes is all solid 8-bit stuff. It's not a co-op mode that's quite up to the level of the best from the NES - like Konami's Contra or Life Force - but it's good, and certainly entertaining. Select 2 Player, though, and you and a friend can flip out, slash baddies and conspire to assassinate the emperor together in simultaneous on-screen action. The heroes - Hayate and Kaede - each have identical abilities, so selecting one over the other won't make any more difference than a palette swap in 1 Player mode.
